I love volunteering at Portland Cares because our director has made such positive changes to the way the system works. The new organization allows us, as volunteers, to focus on the work that is truly needed, and it gives me a sense of purpose knowing that my time and efforts are valued by the staff and director.
The warehouse is now well organized, with designated workstations for different tasks, including a hanging room, a clothing processing room, cleaning stations, and specific areas for sorting and placing donated items. Instead of everything being placed into one giant pile, donations now have organized destinations where they can be properly processed and prepared for families in need.
It is wonderful to see how much more efficient and structured the warehouse has become. I’m proud to volunteer here and be part of a team that is making a difference in our community. For me, this is truly what it means to pay it forward.

Portland Cares has helped my family about five years ago by assisting us with our utility bills when we needed it most. Now, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to give back by donating items to their donation center and helping other families in need, just as they helped mine.

The donation team does an amazing job selecting, preparing, organizing, and pricing the items properly. It makes it easy for shoppers to find quality items at great prices while also knowing that our purchases are supporting a meaningful cause. It;s a win-win — I get to find great deals, and families in our community benefit from the proceeds. I’m proud to shop, volunteer, and give back at Portland Cares.
The thrift store at Portland Cares is so spacious and no longer feels cluttered with items. The new organization, along with the hard work of the team, has made the store feel inviting, welcoming, and easy to shop in. I especially love knowing that when I purchase something from the store, my money is helping families in need right here in our community.

When my family needed assistance with our utility bills, Portland Cares was understanding and never judged our situation. They helped us with our past-due utility bill, which had fallen behind because I was also helping my grandmother with her rent. They didn’t just help us pay the bill—they also connected us with other resources and support. Their emergency financial assistance helped my family get out of a difficult financial hole and gave us the opportunity to get back on our feet.
Portland Cares also makes a difference during the holiday season by providing Thanksgiving boxes and Christmas boxes to assisted living facilities in Portland and Westmoreland. The holiday meals along with essential items to help residents during the winter season. I am truly thankful that Portland Cares thinks of families and individuals who may not have the means to afford these necessities, especially during the holidays. Their kindness reminds us that no one should feel forgotten or left behind during a time when everyone deserves to experience warmth, comfort, and a good meal.
